Prototype

View Details

Prototyping gets ideas out of your head and into the world. A prototype can be anything that takes a physical form—a poster or video that seeks to change policies/practices, a play, or a 3D object. In early stages, make simple prototypes to learn quickly and explore possibilities.

Design and draft a prototype to understand if your idea can work and to best explain to others what your solution is seeking to accomplish.

From the IDEATE step, you have determined what you will design and create to address your CARP topic. Now you need to draft it out. What does a draft prototype look like? Well, it depends what type of solution you have chosen and how you wish to best test it out to see if it will be successful.

For 3D prototyping, there are a number of tools and resources to help create your model or object. Check out the schedule for where and when you can learn how to use and work with the following tools:

P.1 DRAFT PROTOTYPE INTRODUCTION

So you have an idea or two for the solution you want to create. So first things, first: draft it out. By creating a draft, you can better understand many of the specific details and requirements of your idea before you put all that effort in creating a final solution. You can also get others’ input and feedback that may end up changing your idea(s) into something very different.

For 3D solutions: create a sketch:
    1. Use grid paper and use a measuring scale to sketch your draft to the correct proportion.
    2. Draw two versions. One version is a ground level view. The other version is a bird’s eye view.
    3. If your grid paper is in square centimeters, then determine what each centimeter translates to in real-life, such as a foot or a meter. Since there are 30.48 cm in a foot, then your scale would be 1 : 30.48. If you use meters, then your scale would be 1 : 100, since there are 100 centimeters in 1 meter.
If you are creating a play or a video or an APP, try drafting out a Storyboard, which is like a comic strip or graphic novel that shows each step of your message or app with pictures and descriptions. Here is an APP prototype file that you can use.
For text-based, draft out your solutions.
    - For a campaign or a play, your message is your solution. The campaign or play (or other artistic expression, such as a dance) is just the method you will use to promote your solution.
    - Your draft of your campaign or play should be in the form of a detailed outline.

Follow the directions using the buttons below to complete the Draft Prototype Activity.

BUTTON 1: For 3D solutions: take a picture of your sketch (if it’s a drawing) or convert your sketch into a pdf and upload into EL3.

BUTTON 2: For text-based solutions: save your draft outline as a pdf and upload into EL3.

BUTTON 3: When submitting, name your submission, & provide a description about your activity.

Then upload your pdf or png document by clicking Pick File.
